Finding the Glorious Ones – The lesson from the Elders

It was a consistent theme that the Elders always returned to – at one time or another, especially when they ruminated about triumphs in the face of immense odds.

They repeated it to me so much, that it was burned into my soul.

The last time that I saw my Bigmama, she locked her eyes with mine and plainly stated:

“Son…It is a lot of love in this Family… that could teach the world something.”

My Elders all told me this… word for word over the years, without coordination… Often looking deep into me when they spoke.

I can’t help but to recall…

That whenever a group of them (my Great Aunts and Uncles) were assembled they would often respond in unison to a reflection about the power of family with an affirmation:

“MMmmmmhmmmm, Yah, that’s right…”

There would be a look on their countenance that I always took note of… and I would wonder… what got into them?

On more than one occasion they would loop me into the conversion via call and response:

“You hear that… nephew, son… Shun? Don’t ever forget who you is…”

And I would always reply in the affirmative….

The Ancients… My Bigmama, Auntie, Uncles and em’… who gifted me with the stories of our folk and the young Shun P in the middle with a pen… even back then.

“Yeah, I hear you.”

I still do, loudly.

It seems that I was listening more than I could have understood at the time….

That is why, I tell the stories of my folk… to remind US of the power that we wield.
