The 2023 standards in social studies, posted by the Florida Department of Education plans on instructing students how: “enslaved people developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit,”

Seriously?

Let me state my displeasure explicitly – in my role as an Author, Genealogist, Griot and especially as a Poet… with prose.

Fuck you Ron
you of dull wit

the purveyor of
anti-wokeness…
you prefer tokens
of profit
who lack the wherewithal
and poetry
to tell you…
in the words
my Elders,
now the Ancients
who would stare
at fools minimizing
them with their
glare…

to tell
an offended party…

that you ain’t
shit.

you picked
the wrong cause
on a bad day.

This is poetry

I pray for you –
not really, but
I see clearly.

You fear people like me
I read and write books –
speak of searching
for God’s face

Now… these glorious souls
who you minimize –
are those on whose
shoulders I stand…

how dare you
stain the legacy
of those
who allowed me
to be…

and I’ll be damned
if I let the likes
of a Godforsaken man,
in ill fitting suit –
like you
to slander their
grace –

this ain’t no debate

God bless your heart –
don’t get me started

People…
don’t like you
because… you
are trifling
and disheveled
down to the spirit –
truth be told
you act as if
you don’t hear it –

like you fear it.

Eyes being open
against the fallacies
of inhumanity…

I come from those
who didn’t cower
to fools, chumps, jive turkeys or
Trump wannabes.

The gift of my Ancestors
to me
and my ilk…
is to push back
against injustice
in noble ways.

We take shit

into fuel for the greater
good.
