For a living

A Preface to this piece: I have been through several layoffs in my corporate lifetime and after the first one, where I foolishly invested my sense of worth into a monolith that couldn't love me back, I soon understood the layoff or the threat of it, to be one of those uncomfortable truths, unless I created my own opportunities. I remember getting laid off at the beginning at the pandemic, just a couple days before my birthday. I chuckled because, I remembered that my manager at the time, called me "brother" and that was always a harbinger of ill tidings and this time was no different. My key takeaway, life lesson and the spirit that inspired this piece? The real workplace is within, that residency of us. Choose you, as we commit the most vile sin when we pledge to loyalty to the wrong things.

If we live in the shroud
of what we do for a
living
and that life
ain’t overflowing
with fulfillment…
quiet is kept
that is sinning.
Having to rediscover you
on the outskirts
of corporate displacement
runs counter to
entertainment,
word to the wise
appreciate your work
but don’t bemirsch
importance or
gravity of you.

I reiterate, always
choose you.
As a hedge
against the
corporate blues
and the ugliness
that could
ensue.

A reading of the piece over live excursions.
