The inequities of isms

The inequity
of isms,
will weather you…
racism,
sexism,
ageism…
this poetic dichotomy
has been an odyssey since
pen was put to paper…
in living rooms
where my Pops proclaimed
that I would need logic
to deal with them…
keep your nose
in books,
to procure wisdom
as slugs
against
charlatans that
would conspire –
to do evil,
by convincing me
to inhabit the box
in the form
of Black Boy,
but I would not
concur,
smallness inferred
but I was resolute,
cups filled by
the mightiest
so that I could
rise
and tell others
not entertain inclinations
to give up,
but to get up
and shine brightly.
