Son – On your Birthday…

It was a bright and sunny day, I remember circumnavigating the hospital grounds in a trance of sorts.

Awaiting your arrival enveloped me in a host of emotions, the most pronounced one was fear, the fear of an unknown variable.

There wasn’t a manual or a mystical Oracle for me to consult that would allow the easy path of being instantly imbued with the tools to be someone of consequence, to give my all to what I knew would be the most important job of my life.

Being Dad.

I’ve learned a lot on this winding path that you’ve accompanied me on, you’ve willed me into endeavoring to be a better person, daily.
And at this significant juncture of your life, as you depart the confines of your teenage years.

I marvel at what I have been a part of.

You.

Have given me purpose and the wherewithal to push forward when the temptation to acquiesce to the travails of life has beckoned.

You.

Have redeemed my faith in humanity and the innate goodness that is oft forgotten and taken for granted.

You.

I thank you for the unconditional love that you have showered me with over the years, a love that has saved my life many times over.

You.

Are the best part of me and your Mother – and I am honored, privileged and blessed to be your Father.

Seeing the young man that you have become is an ethereal echo of God’s grace.

On this anniversary of your birth.

I encourage you to keep shining, being powerful and never abandoning that mandate that I tendered to you…

To make the Earth shake.

Happy Birthday Son,

Love Dad.
